Fleming was writing for the managers of technology firms, advising them on the care and feeding of "gatekeepers"--the mobile talent who build and sustain small world networks. But Fleming's insights also have profound implications for transportation policy, because higher speed and more frequent commuter rail systems have the potential to expand the geographic extent of small world networks. The Northeast megaregions, with its shoulder-to-shoulder metros, is in a unique position to exploit this opportunity.
