Town Meeting #1 - March 24, 2009 - Kickoff

Kickoff: Reinventing Stamford; Redefining the Recession
March 24, 2009

The kickoff event for Reinventing Stamford launched on Tuesday, March 24th from 6 to 9 pm at the second floor lobby of the Palace Theater. Duane Hill, chair of the Planning Board moderated a roundtable conversation among global thinkers, national urban policy experts, regionalists, and several Stamford civic entrepreneurs. That conversation morphed into several simultaneous conversations among a diverse group of people, local and regional, at other tables, about the conditions facing Stamford and about how to respond to them.

This was the beginning of a civic conversation founded upon this proposition: Change happens when people talk it into being, particularly change that represents a major mind shift. More than half the battle is changing our thinking, burying the dead ideas that are holding us back, and reaching out to grasp the new ideas that will pull us through. If we think this through, action will follow. Much of what we are now doing simply needs to be realigned. For some things, we need to do major restructuring. But both start with a clear understanding of emerging conditions and a path through them.

As food for thought, participants were provided two readings: "Reinventing Stamford: Redefining the Recession" by Kip Bergstrom; and "Attacking the Recession" by Charles Leadbeater.
